Coding relevance

Relevance is one of the crucial criteria for assessing quality argumentation in education. In and education, relevance has never been analyzed or coded. While several theories have included their analysis some indicators cohesion clarity, this characteristic dialogue discourse addressed as a distinct phenomenon. This paper builds on existing studies linguistic philosophy to advance relevance, which turn can be used developing coding scheme evaluating moves. starting from pragmatic principle that moves are instruments pursuing common dialogical goal. Starting classification possible types moves, defined based they propose continue, five illustrated, capturing both topical coherence. Such shown provide guidance distinguishing not only relevant irrelevant but also degrees strength relevance. The theoretical framework assessment will illustrated through corpus classroom interactions collected Portuguese middle-grade schools.
